Sightings May 2017

The last month of May one sighting of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) was reported in Galicia.  This time we received as well a great surprise: sightings from Canada! A small pod of orcas (Orcinus orca) and a grey whale (Eschrichtius robustus) around the Salish Sea.

Not a lot of sightings, but with a great meaning! Our spatial coverage keep on growing, and our network as well! Thank you everyone!!

Sightings received in April 2017

This month we have received several sightings made during February, March and April. We’ve put them all together in the same map, as most of them were done along a sailing trip between Cabo Verde and Cape Town.

The species reported were:

Dolphins. Several groups even it was not possible to identify the species.

Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) reported in the Canaries.

Pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus). Very curious ones! They were spy-hopping 🙂

Killer whale (Orcinus orca). A mother with a calve!

Atlantic spotted dolphin (Stenella frontallis).

Sightings March 2017

Those are the sightings reported in March 2017.

This month’s menu 😉

  • In Galicia, bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) again. This time spotted from land very close to the mussel culture platforms (bateas) in Ría de Vigo.
  • Lots of turtles! All the identified ones were loggerhead (Caretta caretta). Most of them sighted off Madeira-Porto Santo.
  • Risso’s dolphins (Grampus griseus) and Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) off Lanzarote.
  • A pod of four orcas (Orcinus orca) while sailing between the Canaries and the Caribbean.
  • Common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) while sailing between Lanzarote and Madeira, and between Madeira and Porto Santo.
  • Baleen whales travelling north, on the same route as common dolphins. We only saw the blow for one of them, and for the other a bit of head… think it was fin whale!
